What to Expect During Your Eye Glasses Exam

Before they receive new eye glasses, our Manassas-Woodbridge, VA area clients complete a comprehensive eye exam. Adult eye exams usually include the following tests:

  • Visual acuity — You'll be asked to read lines of differently sized letters on a standard “E” chart. Your optometrist will note when you can no longer read certain lines of letters.

  • Pupillary reaction/external exam — The optometrist will evaluate your pupil's reaction to seeing close-up objects and light. We’ll also assess the health of your sclera — otherwise known as the white part of your eye — and your eyelid positioning when open and closed.

  • Retinoscopy — You'll be asked to look through a lens-flipping machine known as a phoropter while your optometrist shines a light into your eyes. This test will determine the type of lens prescription you need to correct your vision abnormalities.

  • Refraction testing — If you need eyeglasses, the optometrist will fine-tune your prescription by having you look through two different lenses and asking, “Which lens can you see through better — this one or this one?”

  • Retinal assessment — After dilating the pupils, your eye doctor will use an ophthalmoscope to examine internal parts of your eyes, such as the optic nerve head, retinal blood vessels and the vitreous.

  • Eye exams for seniors — When we provide eye glass exams in our Woodbridge, VA office, senior citizens will undergo additional tests for detection of glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Selecting Your New Frames

After an optometrist explains the results of your eye glasses exam, you can choose from dozens of beautifully crafted designer frames if you need corrective lenses.

Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you in deciding which frame best suits your facial dimensions and personality.

When choosing the best frames following your eye glasses exam, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I need frames to accommodate bifocals, trifocals or single vision lenses?

  • What's my style — classic, sporty, designer or retro?

  • Am I going to be physically active while wearing my new eyeglasses, or will I be looking at a computer screen?

  • Do I need hypoallergenic frames, stainless steel, all plastic or titanium?

  • Do I want the same size frames as my previous glasses or something larger/smaller?

Should You Get One Pair or Two?

Having two sets of eyeglasses can be practical and fun for several reasons. For starters, it can be easy to lose or damage your only pair of eyeglasses. Having a back-up pair can be a lifesaver. Eyeglasses are also the ultimate wardrobe accessory, whether you want to enhance your favorite night-on-the-town outfit with colored frames or look as businesslike as possible by wearing simple, dark frames.

Did you know you can get sunglasses with prescription lenses as well? No more shading your eyes or squinting when you’re at the beach!
